AEO for local service businesses: the practical playbook

This guide picks up where our AEO 101 guide leaves off. It assumes you already know what answer engine optimization means, and walks through the concrete mechanics for a service business on the New Hampshire Seacoast or in northeastern Massachusetts: schema, Google Business Profile, and review signals.
What is schema markup, in plain terms?
Schema is a block of code on your site that states facts in a format machines read directly, your business name, services, service area, and phone number, instead of making an AI guess at them from paragraphs of text.
Without it, an AI engine has to infer what you do from prose, and inference is where mistakes and omissions creep in. With it, the engine has a direct, structured answer to pull from.
How does Google Business Profile feed AI answers?
Several AI engines pull directly from Google's business data, so your Business Profile description, category, hours, and service area all become inputs to what the AI says about you. If that profile is thin, generic, or out of date, the AI answer built from it will be too.
The description on your Business Profile should be the same wording used on your website. Mixed wording across the two makes the entity harder for an engine to confidently connect.
Do reviews actually affect AI answers?
Yes. Review volume, recency, and what they say in the text all feed into how confidently an AI engine names a business. A handful of old reviews reads differently than a steady, recent flow that mentions your actual services and towns.
What should I fix first?
Start with your Google Business Profile description matching your website word for word, then add schema markup to your site. Those two are the fastest fixes and the ones AI engines lean on most heavily when checking whether a business is real and consistent.
| Fix | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Schema markup on the site | Gives engines structured facts instead of guesses |
| Google Business Profile matches the site, word for word | Consistency is how engines confirm the entity is real |
| Sitemap submitted to Google | Makes sure every page is actually discoverable |
| Steady, recent reviews mentioning real services and towns | Feeds confidence signals engines weigh directly |
| Answer-first page structure | Gives engines a clean, quotable answer to lift |
